Laying strong foundations

Substrate preparation is a critical stage of the tiling/waterproofing process. Proper preparation of a substrate ensures that there is maximum bond between it and the waterproofing membrane or adhesive. Failing to do so can be costly.

Before selecting a substrate type for specific instructions, note all substrates must be:-

in sound condition and free from dust, oil and all loose contaminating materials
dry with no residue or permanent damp
primed using the appropriate primer
when waterproofing repair any holes/voids in the substrate, remove any protruding nails and sharp edges

Ardex (Aust) offer products that either repair substrates (eg. HydrEpoxy range) or reduce the steps involved in preparation (adhesives such as Abaflex, Optima). Therefore always refer to instructions on packaging.
